Exod.33.11 – Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, stayed behind in the Tent of Meeting.
One of the critical lessons we all can learn from the story of Joshua whilst serving under Moses are humility, loyalty, and submission. These three attributes first start with one accepting that they are not equal to the person that they are submitting under.
The act of rebellion that was done by Dathan, Abiram, and Korah could have been more sensible if it had been done by Joshua. Here is a young man who would accompany Moses to the Tent of Meeting, where Moses would talk face to face whilst the pillar of cloud hovered at the entrance. After Moses finished talking to God and left the tent, Joshua would remain behind. Surely, if Joshua’s loyalty and submission to Moses had been questionable, he could have woken up one day and said, “Thus saith the LORD,” and many people would have believed him. Considering his young age, the temptation could have been great.
Though not recorded anyway in the Bible, it would not be far fetched to imagine or assume that some people may have approached him with the idea of supporting him to take over from Moses after wandering in the wilderness for so long. Considering also the many battles he had fought and won, the temptation to yield to such ideas could have been greater. Yet, despite all this, Joshua remained loyal to Moses.
Today, many of us, just one confirmation of a prophecy we gave or one miracle after praying for someone, we start to think we are equal with our Moses. Joshua understood that for him to have all these victories, there was a Moses up on a mountain lifting up his hands.
In whatever you do in your life, no matter how much success you may have or how powerful or popular you become, remember these three inseparable words: humility, loyalty and submission. Once you must these, God will continue to elevate you.
